What My Dad's Bees Taught Me About Time, Focus, and Leadership
My dad is building a bee empire.
In his sixties, with decades of hard work already behind him, he could have chosen to slow down. Instead, he’s doubling down on a dream—to become one of the best beekeepers in Texas. He named his operation Wilder Sky Honey, wears shirts with the logo, and has a vision to leave this legacy to his children and grandchildren.
Watching him pursue this purpose reminded me of the leadership lessons I explored in this week’s reading of Never Play It Safe around attention and time. Author Chase Jarvis wrote, “Time is very elastic. It is always expanding and contracting... ebbing and flowing.” Most of us are what investor Graham Duncan calls Time Billionaires – we have more than a billion seconds left to live. The question is, what will we do with that time?
Many people talk about purpose. Few live it. Fewer still pursue it with the kind of sustained attention that creates lasting impact. My dad is doing that—not by grinding, but by focusing. By protecting his attention and shaping his time around what matters most.
In The Steady Leader, I write about how true leadership is built on focus. Focused attention is a superpower. It directs your energy, your habits, and ultimately, your legacy. And time? Time isn’t the enemy. It’s your canvas.
Here are three lessons you can apply right now:
Audit your attention. Where is it going? Are you giving your best energy to what matters most?
Redefine your time. Busyness is not a badge of honor. Create space to think, dream, and act deliberately.
Start your next chapter. It doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 65—dreaming isn’t a young person’s game. It’s a leadership discipline.
Stay steady,
Schuyler
