How Curiosity Creates Wow Moments
At the Williamson house, this holiday always conjures up feelings of deep gratitude.
Gratitude for our freedom to worship.
To raise our kids with the values we believe in.
To build businesses that make a difference.
This year we decided to celebrate with a little family getaway. The goal was rest and relaxation—but with little kids, “relaxation” looks more like an 0800 Navy SEAL training camp at the pool.
Halfway through the trip, our youngest, Rhett, burned two of his fingers. As we scrambled to get ice, a resort staff member jumped into action. Not only did she deliver ice—she alerted the nurse, who quickly showed up to our room with bandages and medicine. That night, the nurse sent us a dessert and a hand-written note checking in on Rhett. The next day, someone at the ice cream stand saw his hand and gave him his scoop for free—no questions asked.
You know I’m always looking for ways to tie life lessons to business, so I immediately thought about how the leadership at this resort is winning…this resort has obviously built a culture around curiosity and care.
This means that their staff members are constantly asking: “What could we do that would make someone feel seen, loved, and cared for?” This concept is paramount in the hospitality industry, of course; but that doesn’t mean everyone automatically excels at it. This question—rooted in curiosity—is what unlocks wow moments.
In The Steady Leader, we talk about how mental health is not just about rest, but also about having a growth mindset. And curiosity is key to nurturing that mindset. Leaders who are curious don’t just settle for good enough—they ask better questions. They spot invisible needs. And they deliver surprising results.
And in our laundromat business, Laundry Luv, we utilize a “Wow Fund” based on this very principle. The most extraordinary moments are often experienced when someone is curious enough to go beyond the expected.
So, here’s your Steady Leader challenge for your week ahead:
REFLECT: Are you training your team to be curious?
ASK: “What wow moment can we create today?”
REMEMBER: The freedom to lead this way is a gift. Use it well.
