The Mask We’re Tempted to Wear as Leaders
Every leader, especially those with a public platform, feels the temptation to manage an image rather than reveal their reality. Online, everything comes across as artfully curated. Success stories shine, while moments of weakness stay hidden. But true influence doesn’t come from polish; it comes from authenticity.
Frankly, I don’t always get it right.
My investments don’t always pay off.
My leadership decisions aren’t always perfect.
My actions aren’t always aligned with my words.
I am human. I am broken. Just like you. Just like we all are.
Authenticity begins with acknowledging our brokenness and extending ourselves grace. When we live this way, we give others permission to do the same. And when we give others grace, forgiveness, and fresh starts, we build the deepest form of trust.
Jesus modeled authentic leadership. In his book, Jesus the High Road Leader, co-author Chris Hodges writes, “Authenticity matters because it garners respect and invites others to be authentic as well.”
Jesus lived this out:
· He acknowledged His needs: “I thirst.” (John 19:28)
· He admitted His pain: “My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)
· He gave fresh starts to people written off by the world. (John 8)
· His authenticity wasn’t His weakness; it was His strength. It was the very thing that made people trust Him and follow Him.
Practical Steps for Steady Leaders
As leaders, we can model this same authenticity:
· Drop the mask. Share both your strengths and your struggles. Don’t pretend to have it all together.
· Forgive quickly. Don’t keep score. As Paul said, “Love… keeps no record of wrongs.” (1 Corinthians 13:5)
· Give fresh starts. The world is quick to write people off. Choose to restore others, rather than rejecting them.
· Lead with humility. “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)
Steady Challenge
This week, ask yourself: Where am I hiding or pretending? Who around me needs grace and a fresh start? How can I let others see Jesus through my authenticity?
Remember, "We" is always more powerful than "Me."
Stay steady
